IN a story earlier today we carried an appeal for someone with a chainsaw to help cut down a tree which had fallen across Angela Kyle’s driveway on to her husband’s car.

We are delighted to say that a Good Samaritan did turn up to help cut the couple out. He was too far away for Angela to get his name, but she was delighted to offer him the logs in return for his labour.

THERE were several loud crashes at the fire-ravaged Wallis Centre ruin overnight where the gable end of the burnt out building was blown down by Storm Katie. This follows an incident earlier in the week which saw parts of the roof collapse.

The latest collapse appears not to have damaged nearby property or cars, although any further falls could well cause issues for local residents, said Nigel Peacock.

“The future of the centre is unknown due to planning permission delays,” he said, “but
in the meantime, local residents will be asking for action to be taken by the owners,  West Sussex County Council, to make the remaining structure safe.”

STORM Katie has closed Standen today where a tree is down and there is no electricity. However after an early morning pitch inspection, it has now been confirmed that Wasps’ clash with Guernsey will go ahead this afternoon, after some work has been done on the playing surface.

STORM Katie has battered the south east with winds of up to 100mph in places. Planes were diverted from Gatwick overnight and as dawn broke the destructive power of the wind in East Grinstead became apparent.

An Amber weather warning remains in force until later today, when Katie will slowly blow away east, taking the heavy rain and winds with her.

And we have received warnings that the A264 between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells is littered with debris from trees, so if you have to travel today take it easy.

imageTHE Met office has issued a Yellow weather warning of thick fog across the South East tomorrow morning. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to drop tonight, leading to fog formation in many places.

Some areas of cloud will prevent fog from forming in some spots, making the fog rather more patchy than was the case this morning. However, where it does form, it is likely to be dense, and traffic passing in and out of areas of reduced visibility can itself be a hazard.

Fog will then mostly lift by mid-morning but may last until midday in a few prone spots.

THE Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning that a mix of rain, sleet and snow is expected to push south across southern parts of England and Wales through Friday afternoon and evening, before clearing by the early hours of Saturday.

Snow will be predominantly confined to the higher ground above 200-400m with lower levels mainly expecting rain and sleet which may turn briefly to snow in heavier outbreaks of precipitation.

As this front clears south through the evening there is potential for widespread black ice to form quickly on road surfaces and pavements with the potential for difficult driving conditions and for some travel disruption during the Friday evening rush hour and overnight into Saturday morning.

THE new web cam at East Court, which gives the world a regularly updated snap shot of the  “ski slopes” behind East Court mansion, is currently showing as much green as snow, so if you want to go down on a tea-tray you’d better get up there fast.

The webcam is part of a Sackville School 6th form IT project which the Town Council is supporting by allowing a camera to be located in one of its first floor offices facing across the estate and out to the Ashdown forst.

The camera, which is part of a weather recording system, is the work of student James Akehurst, who wrote the software.

The image refreshes every 5 minutes.
