THE directors of the East Grinstead Rugby Club have issued a statement this evening about the financial crisis facing the Club following the withdrawal of its main sponsor.

In it, the directors said the Club had been very fortunate in the past with the generous support it had received from sponsors including Mike Gearon, Colin Dixon and currently Gavin Gleave, the Club’s Director of Rugby and CEO of the Club’s main sponsor.

However over the past two-and-a-half years the directors have asked members to match-fund the support given by its main sponsor in order to secure the Club’s financial future without being overly dependent on a single source of income.

But despite agreeing to this at the Club’s last two AGMs, the directors said “little effort has been made by members” and as a result the Club’s main sponsor has now given notice of withdrawal of funding.

The withdrawal of sponsorship will leave the Club with a shortfall in the region of £80-£100k per year.

The board had made significant progress towards a sustainable plan for the Club’s future by securing planning permission for a 3G pitch, grant-funding and the raising of funds through the lease of an asset.

It had also negotiated with the main sponsor to continue sponsoring the Club on a long term basis, where they not only continue to support the Club, but would also invest in financing the 3G pitch, 3G training area, covered stand, floodlights and ancillary buildings.

However this proposal has been “undermined by a small number of members” said the board, and at an emergency meeting last November the Club began to seek alternatives.

At the Club’s members meeting on 2 March 2016, the working party group presented their plans which highlighted:

a short term plan for EGRFC Limited

a range of short term funding ideas

potential funding by pledges

But the group has now informed the board that they have decided to dissolve and the pledged funding of £35k offered by them is withdrawn.

As a result the board of directors has now sent a request to all Club members, friends and families to pledge £150 each within 21 days.

These additional funds, which the board believes needs to be in excess of £50k, together with existing funds that the board has raised, would allow directors to project forward twelve months, enabling the statutory accounts to be filed and the orderly handover to a new board to run the Club.

The board will be calling an EGM for Monday 25 April, which will allow all members to vote and decide on the future structure of the Club.

WITH G-Force still in hot contention for promotion, tomorrow’s home game against Colchester is going to be crucial, says Club manager Phil Major, who wants to see a “big noisy crowd” up at their Saint Hill ground.

“The players are doing everything they can but it is great to have that loud 16th man cheering the team on,” he said.

12718153_942069159207356_5723501403865978755_nG-FORCE players James Stevenson-Wright and Matt Hopkins took the lead yesterday and walked the rugby club’s G-Dog mascot around East Grinstead to promote Saturday’s very important home match with Colchester. Kick-off 2.15pm.

Mystery surrounds the identity of the unfortunate mutt in the costume, but the G-Dog made friends all around town as he popped in to visit some of the Club’s sponsors – Mansell McTaggart, Coles and O2 – as well as the laundrette that washes the team’s kit.

G-FORCE Captain Clayton says the team is ready for this weekend’s clash with Guernsey.

Clays says Saturday’s game is key to the team’s ambitions for the season – but he’s confident they are up to the challenge.

“We are expecting a tough battle in Guernsey but there is a confidence and belief in the squad and we come off the back of two excellent victories,” he said.

The squad flies to Guernsey on Saturday morning and have a 1.30pm kick off.

12729111_938377309576541_5997904058938141093_nWITH a crucial match against Guernsey coming up this weekend G-Force head coach Justin Bishop was determined to put his team through their paces last night, despite a badly waterlogged pitch.

Wish was able to “work miracles” in finding a patch of ground dry enough to play on. But the team’s dedication to the job in hand claimed one casualty, when James Stevenson-Wright turned his ankle.

G-Force Team Manager Phil Major said “Bish and the players have such a positive attitude but once again it was at the cost of player welfare.

“As a Club we are so lucky to have a coach of the quality of Bish but I am embarrassed at the training facility we are currently offering him.

“Bish not only encounters this with the Seniors but also experiences the same training problems as a Junior parent. A number of the Junior teams have still not trained at the club in 2016.”

Meanwhile G-Force’s James Copsey (top) is looking forward to this week’s away game in Guernsey.

Copsey was a first team regular for Jersey so knows all about Channel Islands rugby.

It will a stern test for G-Force, but with recent wins over Hertford and Tunbridge Juddians in the bag, G-Force travel in a confident mood.

“We want two good training sessions to make sure the mind-set is right for a difficult game in Guernsey,” he said.

But despite a weekend off, he is confident about the team’s performance in what could prove a pivotal match.

“I have been very pleased with the dedication of the squad and we travel to Guernsey following two excellent performances against Hertford and TJs,” he said.

Pulborough 0

East Grinstead 63

AN outstanding performance saw East Grinstead’s Storm blast their way into the semi finals of the Sussex Bowl.

“With all of the disruption we have had this week, it was an outstanding performance from the lads,” said Paul Loader.

Overnight, Storm lost their Captain to illness, and had to reshuffle the pack but the side totally dominated all aspects of the set pieces with big performances from Rob Nitman and the returning Scott Anderson, and Chris Starns tearing it up at outside centre.

Storm now have a weekend off before returning to league action against Old Reigatians in two weeks’ time but will return to full training on Tuesday.

imageSTORM  have selected a side with nine G-Force academy players to face Pulborough tomorrow in the 1/4 final of the Sussex Bowl.

G-Force are on a week off this Saturday so if you want to see the future of G-Force rugby get along to Pulborough and lend them your support.

Kick off is at 2pm and it would be great to have as much town support as possible as the lads  strive for success in the Bowl competition, said Paul Loader.

Meanwhile G-Force head coach Justin Bishop (above right) is delighted with his squad.

“After two great wins they are keen to continue to work harder as a group. G-Force do not have a game this weekend but the players still insisted we trained both Tuesday and Thursday this week –  need I say any more?”

However Bish did sound one word of caution. “We have a tough game next up. An away trip to Guernsey is always difficult and we will need to be at our best.”

Hertford 15

G-Force 23

AN outstanding performance of spirit and togetherness saw G-Force win their vital away match against Hertford this afternoon – and keep their promotion hopes alive at the tightly fought top of the table.

The win sets them up for their match next week with Tonbridge Juddians who are second in the league and four points ahead of the fourth-placed Gs.

G-FORCE, sponsored by the F3 Group, have a “massive” game tomorrow when they visit Hertford, who at fifth in the league are just one place, and one point, behind Grinstead in the tight battle for the top.

But the squad is in good spirits, says manager Phil Major, ahead of what they know will be a tough battle to keep in front of their league rivals.

“The game kicks off at 3pm and we look forward to seeing many of our loyal supporters at the game to cheer the boys on.” said  Phil

Top five in the league, ahead of tomorrow’s matches, are:

London Irish Wild Geese 66

Tonbridge Juddian 62

Westcombe Park 61

East Grinstead 58

Hertford 57

Mike Denbee was given Man of the Match for an outstanding performance.

G-Force 24

Shelford 10

IT was a game G-Force had to win to keep their hopes of league glory alive, but Grinstead showed what they were made of when they put last week’s defeat at the hands of Westcombe Park behind them to win this afternoon’s home match with Shelford by a decisive 24 – 10.

G-FORCE centre Sheldon Tarawa cannot wait for the National 3 clash against Shelford at home this afternoon.

“It was really disappointing to lose at Westcombe Park last week – we are a much better team than that performance,” he said.

G-Force kick off at Saint Hill at 2pm.

Westcombe Park 21

G-Force 17

THIS afternoon’s away match against Westcombe Park was billed as a crunch match if Grinstead were to fulfil their hopes of promotion this season, but the day ended in disappointment with a 21 – 17 defeat at the hands of their close rivals.

With Westcombe Park placed third in the National League Three London, it was vital for fourth-placed Grinstead to bring home a victory as the top teams fight to cement their place in the top three.

But Grinstead’s hopes of getting the new year off to a victorious start were dashed as their hosts claimed what could turn out to be a pivotal win.
