TV presenter favourite Davina McCall will be guest of honour at Lingfield Park’s award-winning Shire horse race as the event takes on an intriguing twist in its fourth year.
Davina will be featuring the Showerking Flying Feathers Shire Horse Race on a new C4 documentary – after challenging a completely novice rider to take part alongside professional jockeys.
The programme is an original new series, which takes extreme examples of some of Britain’s most troublesome health issues and challenges them head on.
In one of the case-studies, Davina challenges 28-year-old James to take part in Lingfield Park’s Shire horse race.
“I can’t wait to see James race at Lingfield – he is the bravest man ever. He’s never ridden before and he’ll be in front of thousands of people. The atmosphere is going to be amazing. He has come so far, I’m so very proud of him.”
The Showerking Flying Feathers Grander National race, will be held on 9 April, the day the Grand National is staged at Aintree.
Novice James will be joining professional jockeys who will cajole the equine giants over a distance of two furlongs in a bid to raise the profile of the threatened breed. The race will be run as a charity race and not under the normal Rules of Racing.
Jacqueline Gardiner, owner of Hurst Green Shires, which organises the race every year at the Surrey race course, said; “This race is a wonderful opportunity to highlight this amazing breed and show how versatile they are, but the safety of all the riders and the horses is paramount.”
Lingfield Park’s Clerk of the Course, Ed Arkell, added: “James will have to pass an assessment of competence conducted by an instructor from either the British Racing School or the Northern Racing College.”
The production company, 7 Wonder, will be filming Davina alongside James, for the documentary to be broadcast on C4 later this year.
